What Is UWB and Why Is It the Gold Standard for Indoor Positioning?
Market Intelligence & Growth Trajectory
IEEE 802.15.4a
First UWB PHY Standard
Defined the first UWB physical layer for ranging and localization, establishing Time-of-Flight and Time-Difference-of-Arrival as core positioning methods for short-range wireless.
DecaWave DW1000
First Commercial UWB Chip
DecaWave (now Qorvo) launched the DW1000 - the first commercially viable UWB transceiver, enabling practical RTLS deployments at scale for industrial and enterprise use cases.
IEEE 802.15.4z
Secure Ranging
Added Scrambled Timestamp Sequences (STS) for cryptographic ranging security, making UWB the only wireless protocol with built-in protection against relay attacks. Foundation for automotive digital keys.
FiRa / CCC
Industry Consortiums
FiRa Consortium and Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) standardized interoperable UWB profiles for smartphones, automotive digital keys, and access control, driving mass-market adoption.
Next-Gen SoCs
Low-Power Integration
Qorvo's DW3000 series, NXP Trimension, and Apple U2 chip deliver dramatically lower power consumption, smaller form factors, and integrated UWB+BLE on a single die, making UWB viable for wearables and compact IoT tags.

* Many production deployments combine UWB with BLE for cost-optimized hybrid architectures. We help you architect the right multi-protocol stack.
UWB delivers pin-point accuracy, typically 10 to 30 centimeters in real-world deployments, depending on anchor density and environment. This is an order of magnitude better than BLE (1–3m) or Wi-Fi (3–5m). In controlled environments with dense anchor grids, accuracy can reach single-digit centimeters.
UWB is the most secure ranging technology available. Its Time-of-Flight measurement is physics-based and inherently resistant to relay attacks, the critical vulnerability in BLE and NFC access systems. IEEE 802.15.4z adds Scrambled Timestamp Sequences (STS) for cryptographic security. This is why BMW, Apple, Samsung, and the CCC consortium chose UWB for automotive digital keys.
Choose UWB when pin-point 3D accuracy, secure ranging, or real-time safety enforcement is the core requirement, including collision avoidance, surgical instrument tracking, digital keys. Choose BLE when cost-per-tag, battery life, and zone-level tracking are more important. Many enterprise deployments use UWB + BLE hybrid architectures with UWB for precision zones, BLE for broad coverage.
Standard UWB ranges 10–50 meters indoors, with up to 200 meters in line-of-sight. For large facilities, we deploy overlapping grids of anchors, each covering a zone with the cloud platform seamlessly stitching location data across the entire site. This modular architecture scales from a single room to multi-building campuses.
